What is Varicose Vein Sclerosis and what is it used for?

Varicose veins sclerosis is a very effective technique, which is performed by introducing a chemical solution in the dilated veins that produces a controlled inflammatory reaction in its internal walls, achieving a fibrosis that will obliterate the light of the vein and with it the disappearance of the varix. Especially suitable for small caliber veins.

Who is a good candidate for the treatment?

Before sclerotherapy, you will have an initial consultation with a dermatologist or vascular medicine specialist who will decide if you are a good candidate for the procedure.

You are not eligible if you are pregnant. You may receive sclerotherapy if you take birth control pills. If you have had a blood clot in the past, your eligibility will be decided on an individual basis, and will depend on the overall health of the area that needs treatment as well as the reason for the clot.

Veins that are potentially usable for future heart bypass surgery will generally not be considered for sclerotherapy, unless they are already considered unusable.

Features of Varicose Vein Sclerosis Treatment

Varice Sclerosis:Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to remove varicose veins and spider veins. Sclerotherapy is a proven procedure that has been in use since the 1930s.
Application: Sclerotherapy consists of the injection of a solution (usually a saline solution) directly into the vein. The solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to collapse and stick and the blood to clot. Over time, the vessel becomes scar tissue that disappears from view.
Treatment result: Studies have shown that up to 50%-80% of injected veins can be removed with each sclerotherapy session. Less than 10% of people undergoing sclerotherapy do not respond to injections at all. In these cases, different solutions may be tried. Although this procedure works for most patients, there is no guarantee of success. In general, spider veins respond in three to six weeks, and larger veins respond in three to four months. If the veins respond to treatment, they will not reappear. However, new veins may appear at the same rate as before. If necessary, you can come back for injections.
Treatment: No anesthesia or hospital admission is necessary. The treatment lasts between 15 and 30 minutes, obtaining the disappearance of the varicose veins in a time that depends on the size of the treated vein.
Recovery: After sclerotherapy, you will be able to resume your regular daily activities. Walking is recommended. You will be instructed to wear compression stockings. After injections, avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, or other anti-inflammatory medications for at least 48 hours. In addition, you should avoid the following for 48 hours after treatment: hot baths, hot compresses, whirlpool baths or saunas, direct exposure to sunlight.

Post treatment and recovery

After sclerotherapy, you can drive home and resume your regular daily activities. Walking is recommended.

You will be instructed to wear support stockings to “compress” the treated vessels. If you have compression stockings from previous treatments, it is recommended that you wear them with you to ensure that they still have adequate compression. Socks will not be adequate if a heavy compression stocking is needed. Your doctor may recommend where to buy heavy compression stockings.

After injections, avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, or other anti-inflammatory medications for at least 48 hours. Tylenol may be used if necessary.

In addition, you should avoid the following for 48 hours after treatment:

Hot baths
Hot compresses
Whirlpool baths or saunas
Direct exposure to sunlight

Showers are allowed, but the water should be cooler than normal. Injection sites can be washed with mild soap and warm water.
