What is Otoplasty or Ear Surgery?

The shape, size or positioning of the ears can make the difference to whether a person has confidence in their appearance or not.  Otoplasty or plastic ear reshaping surgery is the ideal treatment to adjust the position and size of the ears so this operation is aimed at patients who wish to have ears integrated in their facial frame. The result is completely natural, permanent and leaves no visible scars.

Ear surgery can be performed from age 6 to any adult age, when you feel your life is being negatively affected by the appearance of the ears. Usually it is performed with local anesthesia, not being necessary the hospital entrance.

In general a candidate for an Otoplasty is one who:

• They have realistic expectations of what can be achieved with the intervention.
• You are a non-smoker or at least you will stop smoking when the surgeon tells you to.

The postoperativ: After the Ears Surgery

After an otoplasty operation there will be some discomfort and swelling in the area: Keep resting that day, you must sleep with a headband to avoid chafing and see gradually regaining your usual activity. In the consultation with Dr. Puig after the operation we will give you specific instructions on:

• How to heal wounds, scars….
• Some guidelines on the activities to be carried out in the days following the operation.
• Medications to apply or take orally to reduce postoperative pain, help healing and reduce the possibility of infection.
• What symptoms or signs should I watch for in the intervened area and in the general state of health that may be indicative of some type of discomfort.
• The schedule of follow-up visits after surgery.
